Weight with a steel tank: what to know

A steel tank is more negative than aluminum, which lets you drop 1 to 3 kg of lead. Pick HP100 or HP120 in the calculator to compare.

Worked example

For an 80 kg diver with an average build, wearing a 5 mm wetsuit and using a steel HP100 tank in saltwater, the calculator estimates 4 kg (9 lb). Your number will differ with your body and gear, so enter your own values above and then do a buoyancy check.

Common questions

How much less lead with steel?

About 1.5 to 2.5 kg versus an aluminum 80, depending on the tank.

Is the weight on my back a problem?

Trim can change. Re-check how you sit in the water.

Does a steel tank change my trim?

It can, because steel tanks are heavier and sit differently. Check how you lie in the water.

Are HP100 and HP120 different?

Yes, an HP120 is heavier. Choose the right tank in the calculator.

Do I save lead in freshwater with steel?

Yes, both reduce lead. Check at the end of the dive.
