How to do a buoyancy check

A buoyancy check turns the calculator estimate into your own number.

Steps

  1. Put on your full kit with the tank at about 50 bar (500 psi).
  2. Empty your BCD and float upright at the surface, breathing normally.
  3. You should float at eye level. Exhale fully and you should start to sink slowly.
  4. Too high: add 0.5 to 1 kg and repeat. Too low: remove 0.5 to 1 kg and repeat.
  5. Log the result for that suit, tank and water type.

Repeat when you change suit, tank or water type. Ask your instructor to watch the first one.
